  • Why carry an IDP?

For your safety, the UN regulates your International Driving Permit (IDP), which is required to drive in many international countries.

As long as the bearer also possesses a valid domestic driving license, an IDP permits them to operate a motor vehicle in any of the contracting nations other than their place of residence. Contracting countries are those countries that have subscribed to one or more of the UN International Conventions on Road Traffic. Before departing, be sure you have met the country’s IDP criteria. In many countries, it is necessary to have one in order to rent an automobile. There could be substantial legal and/or personal repercussions for failing to comply with this requirement. If you cause loss or damage to someone else’s property while driving a motor vehicle abroad and don’t have an IDP, your claim may be denied.

An IDP gives you peace of mind while you are out exploring the world, even if you are not planning to drive!

Your IDP is a United Nations-issued legal travel document designed to ensure your safety and security while abroad. In many countries, IDPs are needed to rent a car and can come in handy if you ever need identification or aid. The IDP includes your name, portrait, and driving information in multiple languages, making it easily understood by most local officials and authorities in the over 150 countries in which it is recognized. It does not relieve the holder of responsibility to follow all rules and regulations of the countries they visit. In the event of an emergency, a valid IDP will allow you to drive in most nations outside of your own.
