You must be at least 18 years of age.

The authority responsible for issuing IDPs differs from country to country. In most nations, however, IDPs can only be issued and information can be obtained from Automobile Clubs. If you want to join a legitimate car club in your nation, you can see if there is one here.

The administration that issues the IDP and the official procedure can make a difference. The process can take as little as a few minutes at an issuing office or as long as a few weeks if the application must be mailed in.

A fine or citation may be issued as a penalty. Without an IDP, a driver is consequently driving without a legal license and if caught, highway patrols may impound the car and arrest the driver or give him/her a ticket for a necessary court appearance.

No

As long as your domestic driver's license is still in good standing, yes.

Your driver's license information is translated into other languages, including English, on the International Driving Permit (IDP). This treaty came into existence by virtue of various UN Conventions on Road Traffic (1926, 1949 and 1968). The International Document of Proof is now accepted as valid identification in over 150 countries. When used in tandem with a National or Domestic Driver's License, the IDP can facilitate communication across national boundaries and eliminate the need for translation services.

The International Driving Permit is recognized by many nations that do not accept foreign driver's licenses. A local language translation may be necessary in order for some nations (such as Spain) to recognize a driver's license from another country. The IDP can satisfy these types of scenarios. Keep in mind that while the government of a country might not call for an IDP, car rental agencies operating within that country might. Getting an IDP before you leave can prevent a lot of headaches. Even if you have a valid U.S. driver's license and plan on residing in a foreign nation for an extended period of time, you must obtain a foreign driver's license and comply with local driver's licensing requirements. If you plan on working or living in a foreign country, you'll likely need to obtain a local license.

You do not have a separate driving record with an IDP because the IDP has no independent authority beyond that of your driver's license. Only when the IDP is shown alongside a valid driver's license does it have any legal standing. Your home driver's license and your international driver's permit (IDP) must be shown to any law enforcement official in a foreign country. If a citation is given to you, it will be shown on the driving record that is with your driver's license.

No. The IDP is only good for a year, but that doesn't mean you may break the law however it's written. For example, in many countries, if you take up residency or a job there, you need to obtain a local license.

A 1949 convention IDP can only be used for up to a year after it was issued. Validity periods for 1968-style IDPs are three years. However, the length of time an IDP is valid cannot exceed that of your domestic driving permit. Furthermore, several governments only recognize IDPs from foreign visitors for a limited time, typically for the duration of their tourist visas. Can a foreign visitor to the United States get an IDP from AAA if he or she unexpectedly needs one during their stay? No. An IDP must come from the same nation that granted the foreign driver's license. A person from the United Kingdom must have an IDP issued in the United Kingdom if they possess a United Kingdom driver's license.

Photographs that have been scanned are not allowed. Guidelines can be found in the document U.S. Passport Photo Requirements. Polaroid-style images are permitted. It's possible to take photographs in either color or black and white. We cannot accept photocopies.

You can legally drive with a temporary license, but you shouldn't leave the country until you get your permanent license. A temporary license is unlikely to be accepted by foreign authorities.

In all of South America EXCEPT Brazil and Uruguay, the International Driving Permit from 1949 will suffice. The 1968 IDP is valid in Brazil and Uruguay, albeit with some time limits.

That is a question for the country that granted your domestic driver's license. An application form (typically downloadable from the website of the relevant local authority or automobile club), two signed passport-sized photographs, a photocopy of your valid domestic driver's license, and a small processing fee are typically required.

Key Facts about International Driving Permits…

  • You must also keep your domestic driver’s license on you at all times in addition to your IDP, as neither can act alone.
  • You are still responsible for abiding by the rules and laws of the countries you visit, regardless of whether or not you are an IDP.
  • There is a one-year time limit on the use of the 1949 version. The 1968 version is good for three years.
The length of time that you can use your IDP, however, cannot exceed that of your domestic driver’s license. Certain countries have regulations in place about the 1968 that you may encounter.
  • When an IDP expires, a new one can be issued in its place (with a new photo), but if you live overseas, you may need to apply for a local license instead.
  • Only drivers in possession of a valid domestic driving license (and not a foreign driving license) are eligible to receive IDPs.
  • IDPs can only be issued to those over 18 years of age.
  • People who already have a learner’s permit cannot apply for an IDP.
  • Even if you don’t plan on driving while overseas, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is a useful form of identification to have.
  • The United Nations recognizes IDPs as valid forms of identification, and they are recognized internationally (in more than 150 countries).
  • In the event that you find yourself in a situation where you need to speak with foreign authorities, an IDP will allow you to do so in a variety of languages (including but not limited to English, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Italian, German, Arabic, and French).
  • An IDP gives you an extra form of photo ID along with your personal details (this can be useful if you are ever asked to surrender your passport, which can happen under certain circumstances in some countries).
